I originally started my blog to document my journey into trying to make a living working online, primarily through affiliate marketing. It was more for me personally so I could look back and see what I’ve been through – the fact it makes money each month is just a bonus.

Hmm, I always struggle to word it right when people ask what I do for a living. I admit it’s changed over the years because it usually ends up in a 20 minute conversation just trying to explain what it consists of. The end result usually is that I promote other people’s products online.

Failing campaigns still hurts but like you said, its part of the game. The most frustrating things is having a bad series of campaigns that fail – they each take you a step down. Before I took a break I was going on a downward spiral being able to get something working which then made me doubt if I can actually do it... which then led to my next campaign failing so I took a break and worked on something else.

Came back a month or two later and started again, it has definitely helped me get back where I wanted to be so don’t be afraid to take a little break and come back fresh and ready.

How did you feel when you start seen results for your work?

Amazing! It’s always nice to see hard work pay off. In the beginning I worked a full time job and spent as much time learning affiliate marketing as I could so I was working really long days. To finally see it all worthwhile just shows that if you put the work in – you will be rewarded.

The hardest thing to do when you start seeing your first success is letting it go to your head, don’t expect it to last forever, continue to work on a) scaling that campaign and b) working on new campaigns to minimise the risk.

I know how it feels to have all your eggs in one basket then something happens overnight and it’s all taken away from you. This industry is fast paced, I’ve only been in it about 3 years and have seen so many changes so you need to keep level headed and pushing towards your goals.

What piece of advices would you give to affiliate newbie’s that's just starting out?

Stick to it, browse around the internet and see what’s working. Try and find out why that’s working and improve on it. Don’t just go out and rip a campaign that’s already running, you don’t know all of the details so chances are that will lose money off the bat.

Minimise your risk by speaking with your affiliate manager to find an offer that’s converting and do your research into the niche. Try and be creative so that you’re not just another person doing the exact same fighting for the exact same traffic.

One big thing I would suggest is that when you start seeing profit, reinvest as much as possible back into your business. You will be amazed how fast things can explode, just make sure you’re ready.

When you jump from task to task without proper organization you waste a lot of time and you are less likely to meet your deadlines.

2. Organize your desk properly. Clean out your drawers and make sure whatever stationary you use on a regular basis is easily accessible. You may not realize it but an hour in your daily schedule could be wasted on searching for a stapler.

3. Conversations are great but cut down on the chit chat. You may work with a very friendly and chatty person. Chatting can take up a lot of time, way too much time. Say things like “Sorry can’t talk now in the middle of something”. We all like to have friends in the office so during breaks show your colleagues that you are happy to chat.

4. Take your breaks. People that work nonstop for two long are heading for breakdown and a few minutes of fresh air is good to refresh the mind.

5. No social media. Get internet access at home or use your smart phone at home for your social media. At work you are busy with your employer’s time and just quickly checking on your friends status could lead to much more time spent on social media than what you promised yourself. Unless you want to use social media for marketing at work it is a big NO, NO.

6. Educate yourself. The more you learn about your work the more efficient you will become. If you keep yourself updated on the latest innovations in your industry, your knowledge will start to show. Who knows you could even be up for the next promotion.

7. Arrive on time. If you are getting to work late you are going to feel rushed all day. Try and change your morning habits and arrive at work as early as possible. If you are able to get to the office before things get busy you can organise your day well.

8. Ask for help. If you are unsure about a task do not try and waffle around it, immediately ask for help. I know some employers are not understanding and expect you to instantly know everything. If you are too scared to approach your employer ask your colleagues or do research online.

9. Listen carefully. If you are not getting what your tasks are the first time or misunderstanding what you need to do you are wasting a lot of time. Listen to what is required carefully the first time around.

10. Use the tools that you have around you effectively. I like using excel because it is such a time saver you put in a formula once and then you just have to add your new data and it is all there for you. Using your computer software and other tools well you can save a lot of time.

Do stuff
Being productive and actively involved in your job is a sure fire way of passing the time more quickly. It helps if you have a job that you enjoy, and that stimulates you, but even in the worst jobs there tends to be something that’s more enjoyable than the rest of it. Try to focus on the part that is best about what you have to do.

Stay positive
Life, both at work and at home, throws problems at everyone. Dwelling on the problems, especially when you’re stuck at work not able to do anything about them, is going to make time drag. By letting go of the problems that you can’t solve right now, you can feel happier about what you can actually do right now.

Get active
Increasing your heart rate will make you feel more alert and awake, and help you stay on top of the world. Try getting a little more active. There are exercises that can be done in office seats, although in open plan offices you may look a little weird doing them. But try walking briskly to get tea, or to the toilet. Going for a walk at lunchtime provides more of a break from than just sitting at your desk or in a cafeteria with a dried up sandwich. It provides a complete break from the workplace and you can return feeling virtuous about having exercised as well having escaped from behind the desk for a while. If you work on a business or science park, you might even be able to get involved in a sports club at lunchtime – as available at Harwell Oxford, for example.

Break the day up into manageable pieces
An eight hour working day can feel like it lasts forever. Two hours is a much more achievable goal. Experts in how our brains work say that 30 minutes is optimum. Aim to get a certain task, or a certain number of things done, within your chunk of time and reward yourself with a break or treat when you do.

Avoid clock watching
On the other hand don’t spend your time counting down the minutes. By focusing strongly on how many minutes have passed and how many are still left, you’ll be so much more aware of the time crawling by. Distract yourself from the clock in any way you can.

Talk to people
Talk to customers, talk to co-workers, make phone calls, and spend some of that time just talking, not necessarily work focused. Customers like to be talked to; your co-workers will probably be as bored as you and enjoy the chat also.
